Swamp Stew

As told to me by my friend Misty

Swamp stew is really popular right now. It has a lot of southern charm and it’s probably one of the easiest crowd pleasers you can make. My son came home from Misty’s house and informed me that I needed to ask for the recipe. I did have to change a few things up to fit some of Chris’ health issues and I was missing a few things, but this batch was so amazing that I can’t wait to use Misty’s full recipe. The pic up there is my version that substituted seasoned black eyed peas for the beans, but I can only imagine how incredible the original recipe will be. Let’s get busy!

You can’t get any better than these for turnip greens in a can. I’ve always adored the collards too. You will need two of these for the full recipe. Do not drain them, just go ahead and put them in your large crockpot with all the goodness they came with.

Protein and fiber here! These are name brand. You do you, but do get two. Drain and add them into your large crockpot.

Drain and dump! Two of these if you please.

One of these drained and into the crockpot we go!

Ok, if you love a little more heat than I do then you need one of these drained and dumped into the crockpot. If you have a baby mouth like me that can’t take the heat, then use two of the mild Rotel cans instead and leave this hottie on the shelf. Your stew will still have a little heat to it without this. You do you on this one.

One of these stirred right in.

2 cubes of vegetable bouillon into the pot!

Just one quart of chicken broth and you are ready to work on that sausage!

See how the sausage is sliced into little rounds? You will need to slice three “big packs” of small rope sausage. Conecuh has a great sausage but I love Kelly’s too. I’m not picking sides in that fight. Slice, brown, drain, and stir that sausage into the stew! Cook on high for 2-3 hours in the crock pot.

You can also make this on the stove top by combining all your ingredients into a large stock pot instead of a crock pot. You’ll just need to simmer it on the stove for about thirty minutes and it’s ready to go. I made a half batch and it fed me, Chris, and James with a quart leftover. So stinking good!!! All the images above were sent to me by Misty (except my soup bowl) and are not advertisements. These folks don’t know I’m breathing. I just wanted to be sure you could see for yourself what Misty used. You do you.

Cuisine American

Ingredients

  • 2 cans turnips with broth
  • 1 can hot Rotel drained you can use mild instead of hot
  • 1 can mild Rotel drained
  • 2 cans kidney beans drained
  • 2 cans northern beans drained
  • 2 Vegetable bouillon cubes
  • 1 PKG vegetable mix
  • 3 big pkg Conecuh
  • 1 quart chicken broth One carton

Instructions

  • Slice Conecuh sausage (or small rope sausage of your choice) into small rounds, brown and drain them, set aside. In a large Crockpot, pour in 2 cans of seasoned turnip greens with broth. Drain and pour in the cans of Rotel and beans. Stir in Knor Veggie Mix, sausage, broth and add bouillon cubes. Cook on high 2-3 hours. (Or you can simmer everything in a large stock pot on the stove for 30 minutes. That's what I did)
This dish is a little on the spicy side and goes well with sweet cornbread like Jiffy cornmeal mix or just add 1/2 cup sugar to your cornbread recipe. The sweet cornbread is optional. I used mild Rotel instead of hot because I have a sensitive pallet and it was still on the warm side to me thanks to the seasoned collards and the sausage. Feel free to adjust to your taste on heat if need be. This makes a big crockpot full. I made half a recipe and it fed the three of us with a quart leftover.

      • It’s just the cost that bothers me. Here in Dothan, that’s $33.24. But I made half the recipe and even the little kids liked it so $33.24 of sausage it is!! I couldn’t find either of the Knorr products so I used Better than Buillon vegetable. I also drained the turnips and added a little extra chicken broth. I put a tablespoon of sugar to take the bitterness out of the turnips. I mistakenly used white kidney beans but it was still so good. One of the kids asked for corn in it next time. The sound of corn didn’t sound good at that time but what do you think?

  1. I love Swamp Soup especially when I use leftover homegrown greens with the pot licker as the base. I brown Bryan smoke sausage and sauté a chopped onion with it. I’m the only one in my family that will eat it!
